For more than 70 years, the technology world has used two letters to describe one of the most important developments in human history:
AI: Artificial Intelligence.
Now, those two letters are being replaced in one very visible place.
On 29 September 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order titled "Inaugurating the Era of Super Intelligence." It directs U.S. executive-branch departments and agencies to use "Super Intelligence" and "SI" instead of "Artificial Intelligence" and "AI" in official communications, websites, reports, policy documents and other non-statutory materials.
Elon Musk publicly backed the change, posting "No more AI. SI. It's better," and said SpaceXAI will be renamed SpaceXSI. He has not given a date for the rename.
So is AI now becoming SI? And what does this actually mean for a business in India?
What the order actually says
Executive Order 14434, in short
- Signed: 29 September 2026
- Who it covers: U.S. executive departments and agencies, in their official correspondence, public communications, websites, reports and policy documents
- Who it does not cover: private companies. The order does not require businesses to change their names or products
- Legal meaning: for now, "Super Intelligence" covers the same technologies that existing U.S. law already defines as artificial intelligence
- What comes next: the President's science and technology adviser is asked to propose a federal definition of "Super Intelligence" within 60 days
In other words, the immediate change is about language, not a rewrite of U.S. law.
Why the name matters
The order says the term "Artificial Intelligence" implies "simply imitating or automating human intelligence," and argues that this no longer describes the technology's frontier.
Supporters present the change as recognition of how far the technology has advanced. Some commentators describe it as a rebranding exercise. Several AI companies have reportedly said they expect "SI" to be used mostly in dealings with the White House, and none have renamed their models.
Whichever view you take, modern systems can already:
- Understand natural language and documents
- Generate text and images
- Write and review software
- Assist with research
- Interact with customers
- Use external tools
- Perform multi-step tasks
That is why many people feel the word "artificial" undersells what these systems now do.
SI is not the same as superintelligence
This is the point most headlines skip.
Researchers have traditionally used superintelligence, usually abbreviated ASI, for a hypothetical intelligence that greatly exceeds human ability across virtually all relevant domains. That remains a much higher bar than today's AI models.
So two different things now share a similar name:
- SI (Super Intelligence): the U.S. federal government's new term for the technologies it previously called AI
- Superintelligence: a research concept describing a far more advanced form of intelligence that has not been built
Calling today's technology "SI" does not mean humanity has created superintelligence in the research sense.
What this means for businesses
For a business owner, the terminology debate is not the important part. Whether we call it AI or SI, the real question is:
What can intelligent technology actually do for my business?
A company does not benefit simply because it has an AI chatbot. It benefits when the technology understands a real requirement and solves a real problem.
Every business needs something different
Consider three businesses.
A car garage may need an intelligent WhatsApp assistant that answers service enquiries, collects vehicle details, handles appointment requests and passes complicated cases to staff.
An apparel manufacturer may need a system that understands buyer enquiries, answers MOQ questions, shares catalogue information, reads specification documents, collects order requirements and helps qualify international buyers.
A clinic may need an assistant that answers basic service questions, collects appointment requests, shares operating information, sends reminders and routes the right conversations to staff.
The underlying technology may be similar. The solution should not be identical. Your business has its own customers, products, processes, data, policies and goals, and intelligent automation works best when it understands them.
From chatbot to workflow
The next stage is not simply better conversations. It is connecting conversations to actions.
Imagine a customer messaging on WhatsApp: "I want to book my car for service next Tuesday."
A basic chatbot might reply: "Please contact our service department."
A customized system could understand the request, collect the vehicle details, check the business rules and available slots, offer options, confirm the customer's choice, create the appointment, send a confirmation and notify the right employee.
That system is no longer just answering questions. It is helping the business perform a workflow.
More intelligence does not mean less human control
Businesses should not hand unlimited authority to a system just because it is more capable. Some things should stay with people:
- Financial decisions and high-value transactions
- Sensitive customer situations and complex complaints
- Important approvals
- Decisions that need professional judgement
A well-designed system defines what the technology can do and when it hands a conversation or task to a human. The goal is human plus intelligent automation, not blind automation.
What small businesses should do now
You do not need to rush into the latest trend. Start with one practical question:
Which repetitive or time-consuming part of my business could be improved with customized intelligence?
It could be customer enquiries, WhatsApp communication, lead qualification, appointment management, document processing, sales follow-up or business reporting.
Pick one meaningful problem. Understand it properly. Build the right solution. Measure the result. Then expand.
Frequently asked questions
What is SI?
SI stands for "Super Intelligence." It is the term the U.S. federal executive branch is now directed to use in place of "AI" under Executive Order 14434, signed on 29 September 2026.
Has AI officially been renamed SI?
Only inside the U.S. federal executive branch. Scientists, companies and governments elsewhere still use "AI," and the order does not require private companies to change anything.
Does the order change how AI is regulated?
Not by itself. For now, "Super Intelligence" is defined by reference to the same technologies that existing U.S. law calls artificial intelligence. A proposed federal definition is due within 60 days.
Is SI the same as superintelligence?
No. Superintelligence is a research concept for a hypothetical system far beyond human ability across nearly all domains. SI, as used in the order, describes today's AI technologies.
This is where nikvizTech fits
At nikvizTech, we believe business intelligence should be personalized. We do not believe every business needs the same chatbot, or that every business needs an AI agent, or that anyone should adopt technology simply because it is popular.
We look at the business first. We understand the workflow, identify the real requirement, and then design a solution around it. For one business that may be a customized WhatsApp AI receptionist, for another a lead-qualification system, and for another document intelligence or internal automation.
The technology should adapt to the business, not force the business to adapt to the technology.

AI or SI: the name is only the beginning
The debate over AI and SI will probably continue, and we may see both terms for some time. The more useful question is not what we call it. It is what we do with it.
The future may be called AI. It may be called SI. But the real opportunity is customized intelligence: your business is different, your requirements are different, and your solution should be different too.
